Review

It’s that time of year again, when the nights are drawing in and there’s a chill in the air. (Well for some of us anyway!) AND there is a new MCF release, the 16th game in the series. You play as Master Detective, who’s vacation has been cut short by an urgent call from the Queen of England. Your detective skills are needed again, this time in America. Specifically, the town of Avondel, Vermont. Where a supernatural entity has been scaring what few remaining residents are left in this near deserted town. Even the authorities are wary of investigating. Which is good, as you’ll be the first on the scene to investigate, unhampered by the usual officials!

This is how the new MCF game opens. And in its atmosphere, design and story premise, it already feels more like a MCF game, compared to the previous chapter.

And then we are straight into the game. The first tasks including the hidden object scenes are good but relatively easy. But the game play, quickly becomes more involving and multi-layered.

Game Play

Hidden Object Scenes
There are mainly interactive text lists in the hidden object scenes. But they also include multiple steps to find the items. These were enjoyable to play. Some HO scenes are played again. You also have to be on the look-out for pieces of a letter, which is part of an ongoing collectible task.

Mini Games and Puzzles
The mini-game puzzles also have layers of tasks to complete. With a good variety of puzzle types and difficulty. I found the puzzles, overall sufficiently varied and challenging to keep me interested. You can skip parts or all of the puzzle, if you wish. My only quibble with the game play, is that the mini-game instructions were not as clearly explained as they could have been.

Collectibles and Achievements
There is also plenty of additional game play. In the form of collectibles and achievements. Collectibles include morphing objects. Finding pieces of a letter in the HO scenes. Collecting lore cards, which reveal snippets of the town’s revenant folklore. And you also have to find and kick piles of leaves. These last two relate to a childrens book of folktales. The inventory bar has an indicator, if there are collectibles present in your current location.

The bonus chapter, which is unlocked on completing the main game. Features a side story to the main plot, about the revenant.

The Story

The story itself is a compelling one, and is engaging from the beginning. Revolving around a high school mystery from decades before, that affected many in the town. But ended in tragedy, for one at least. With the recent supernatural events bringing memories of this event back to the fore. Especially for those remaining residents who all seem to have some sort of link to that past mystery.

Atmosphere, Visuals and Sound
The threatening and mysterious atmosphere is kept up throughout. From the scenes of the deserted town, with its closed down shops and empty streets. To later in the game as the action ramps up. The well-designed and clear visuals also added to the foreboding atmosphere. The soundtrack and sound effects are minimal but done well. However, the voice-overs were not always convincing.

Tools and Features
There is a strategy guide, a fast-travel map, a box for the Lore cards you collect and your journal/case report. Plus the usual skip and hint buttons. The HUD/inventory bar is, as always is well designed by Eipix. Allowing for easy access to everything you need. Without having to step out of the game completely.

Overall

Overall, story-wise MCF16 was very good, compelling to the end. With a tone and level of threat that you’d want from an MCF game! The game play was also very good, with enough challenge and variety to satisfy Mystery Case Files fans. Though the puzzle info could have been better and clearer. And there was plenty of Collector’s Edition extras. The design was good, voice-overs a bit hit and miss. This is a short game, with about 3 hours of game play. But the many different collectibles meant there was more than enough to go back and replay it. To find all the collectibles and gain all the achievements.

The Revenant’s Hunt is definitely better than MCF15. And is a bit more like a Mystery Case Files game. Mainly because of the storyline. This is definitely worth giving it a go, or trying the demo at least.
