The Coliseum is one of the main additions in the 10-Year Anniversary update for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. It involves daily boss battles that reward you based on your performance. And today I am here to help you improve that performance by sharing this complete SWGOH Coliseum guide.
This guide brings together everything known so far about early progression, Stormtrooper Luke’s performance, and the mechanics behind the first bosses – especially Jotaz, which has caught many players off guard.
How the Coliseum Works Under the Era System
Coliseum bosses rotate daily, and each run sets your high score for that day. Era units are the only characters allowed in the mode, and their power comes from Era Levels rather than classic gear or Relics.
This is why early attempts can feel unpredictable: your roster begins at a low power floor, and you must build it incrementally using rewards from the Episode Track, Era Store and the Coliseum itself.
Players who log in at Era launch share the same boss rotation cycle, and early scores matter because the leaderboard is fresh. For that reason, the first 48 hours of an Era tend to be a scramble to upgrade, test, iterate and push for a strong placement before others catch up.

Why Early Deaths Happen So Quickly

One of the first bosses, Jotaz, has a basic ability that deals 250% extra damage to buffless targets. If Stormtrooper Luke has no buffs, the hit is strong enough to knock him out almost instantly at low levels.
This surprises many players because the AoE from Jotaz dispels buffs right before the follow-up basic attack. If you’re caught without a buff immediately after the AoE, the next hit can end the run abruptly.
The Early Coliseum Progression Loop
To fully prepare for the Coliseum, here’s the progression loop that you should follow:
- Clear your marquee event to whatever point you plan to stop at.
- Buy a small amount of Era currency from the Era Store.
- Level your marquee unit as far as your materials allow.
- Attempt your Coliseum run.
- Claim the reward track items.
- Spend those items to upgrade again and repeat steps 4-6.
This cycle moves fast during the first day of an Era because each small increase in Era Level improves survivability and scoring potential.
Of course, if you want to follow an easier route, the pay-to-win mechanics come to help. For 1,200 Crystals, you can currently grab Era currency and item packs that can boost Stormtrooper Luke into Era Level 10–15 range on day one. The downside? It costs money.

How to Beat Tier 1 With Stormtrooper Luke

Currently, Stormtrooper Luke is the main character and even though more will join your roster later in the Era, the early days belong to him.
To get through Tier 1, the key is understanding how his buffs work and how Jotaz punishes you if those buffs fall off.
At low Era Levels, Luke has limited access to buffs, his main source of buffs is Special 1, while Jotaz opens with an AoE that removes buffs and the follow-up basic attack hits extremely hard if Luke is buffless.
To avoid this (and a potential insta-kill), you should get a buff active immediately after the Boss attacks. If you can activate Special 1 right after the dispel, Luke survives the next hit far more consistently.
As you level up more (above level 10), things get a lot easier. At that point, Luke has enough durability combined with better scaling from the Era Level system, making the fight more forgiving. However, the core principle remains unchanged: don’t go into Jotaz’s basic attack without an active buff.
Coliseum Strategies in the Long Run
Right now, the Coliseum is new, and everybody seems to be confused and upset about the massive early on damage spikes. But because it ties directly into the Era system, the way players engage with it will evolve through each rotation of bosses and every new Marquis release.
What feels unstable in the first 48–72 hours of an Era becomes far more predictable once your roster gains additional Era Levels and you unlock more characters. And, also extremely important, as you learn boss patterns and how to counter them, as is the case of Jotaz, detailed above.
Deeper and better strategies will appear as we get more experience, but this early guide that focuses on Jotaz should help you get started on the right foot.
For now, the best approach is to experiment, compare score patterns and share your attempts. As new marquee units release throughout the Era, the meta will shift and open new paths for higher scoring runs – so please share your findings with other players in the comments down below. Together, we can find the best strategies to master the Coliseum in SWGOH.
