The Bloons Tower Defense series includes six main games and four spin-offs, so there are 10 games in the series.
If you want to play the games chronologically, I am listing below all the Bloons TD games in order of release, including the 4 spin-offs based on this game.
Note: I’m not including the full Bloons series here, only focusing on the tower defense games and those that similar game mechanics. Let me know if you’d like me to do the entire series instead.
Bloons Tower Defense
Release date: 2007
Description: Bloons Tower Defense is the first game in the series and it was released as a free flash browser game.
It only had 5 towers (Dart Monkey, Tack Shooter, Ice Tower, Bomb Tower, and Super Monkey) and 1 map, with no available difficulty. But it was enough to put the legendary series on the map.
Bloons Tower Defense 2
Release date: 2007
Description: Bloons Tower Defense 2 was released shortly after the original BTD game, adding extra content like new towers, maps, bloons, and an increased difficulty option. It was an instant hit.
Bloons TD 3
Release date: 2008
Description: Another year later, Bloons TD 3 was released, which was also when the game’s name changed to the shorter version.
The game included new towers, maps, bloons, and a lot of content. Various versions of this game were launched on other platforms with fewer or more additions. It came on PSP in 2010, but there’s also a original iOS version titled Bloons TD.
Bloons TD 4
Release date: 2009
Description: Bloons TD 4 continued in the same pattern one year later, with the addition of a sandbox and an apocalypse mode which allowed for a continuous, endless game.
Additionally, the graphics were improved and a new leveling system was added, but also the ability to save your game’s progress. On top of those, new content was also added.
This was the most popular Bloons TD game to date and remains one of the most appreciated in the series, making the most impressive leap in terms of improvements.
It’s also the first game in the series to receive an expansion pack – aptly named Bloons TD 4 Expansion – which brought in new towers, new maps, but also a brand new game mode (Deflation) and a new game mechanic that specialized the in-game towers.
Bloons TD 5
Release date: 2011
Description: Bloons TD 5 has various versions. The original one was released in 2011, the mobile version in 2012, and the Steam version in 2014.
Additionally, a Bloons TD 5 Deluxe edition was released in 2012 with lots of new content including towers, tracks, and missions.
Just like the previous games in the series, this new version added new towers, new gameplay mechanics and plenty of new maps and challenges.
Bloons TD Battles
Release date: 2012
Description: Bloons TD Battles is the first spin-off game of the series, offering fans of the series the option to compete against one another in one of four game modes.
The game re-used many maps and features from the previous BTD game, but also introduced plenty of new mechanics, enjoying a solid reception from the fan base.
Bloons Monkey City
Release date: 2013
Description: Bloons Monkey City is the second spin-off released in the series, and also a game based on BTD 5.
It features a combination of tower defense and city-builder and has a steady progression system to keep you occupied and offer even more variety if tower defense gameplay only is starting to become boring.
Bloons TD 6
Release date: 2018
Description: The newest main game in the series is Bloons TD 6, released in 2018. It changes the perspective from 2D to 2.5D and introduces Heroes, Paragons, and more offensive mechanics.
With daily and weekly challenges, as well as lots of new content, the game has a lot to offer and shows that the game still has a lot to offer. And also makes us really excited about a potential BTD 7, which is long overdue.
Bloons Adventure Time TD
Release date: 2018
Description: I am considering this a spin-off, even though it has the same mechanics as the main series, but with more weapons, maps and items.
The Bloons have invaded the Land of Ooo and it’s up to Finn, Jake, and the monkeys to stop them! Bloons Adventure Time TD is an awesome crossover between the award-winning animated series Adventure Time and Bloons TD!
Bloons TD Battles 2
Release date: 2021
Description: Bloons TD Battles 2, the latest addition to the series, is a sequel to the 2012 Bloons TD Battles. It features similar gameplay to its prequel, with the addition of extra content and much improved visual elements.
